Other PEM services

The way they handled the deal was very very good

PEM Corporate Finance advises on sale of Essex Medical

The owners of Essex Medical and Forensic Services (‘EMFS’) are delighted to confirm that they have sold the business to Global Solutions Limited (‘GSL’) which has itself been acquired by G4S plc, a FTSE 100 company.  EMFS is a leading provider of medical and clinical forensic services to the Police.  GSL is a leading specialist operator of hospitals, prisons and secure areas for the public sector in both the UK, South Africa and Australia.

EMFS is a rapidly growing business formed in 2004 by Dr Adam Cutts, a local GP who successfully won contracts to provide medical and forensic services to the police forces in East Anglia (“police surgeon” work).  The business has revolutionised the delivery of such services, providing appropriately qualified medical staff to the front line within an hour of a request.  This has helped the police to manage and process incidents more efficiently and has helped to ensure the public are well looked after when in police care.

The business employs over 120 nurses and paramedics and 50 doctors and has expanded its services across the country.  Dr Cutts is recognised as a national expert in the forensic medicine field and is helping to deliver dedicated facilities for the handling of rape victims in the region.  He is supported by a strong Board of Directors led by Mr Steve Roberts, Jon Clapson and Julie Cockrell who together have helped the business grow rapidly.  EMFS is now poised to grow further as more police forces seek to outsource this work to specialist providers such as EMFS.

Commenting on the deal Dr Cutts said, “These are exciting times in the medical forensics market; police forces up and down the country are recognising that the private sector can deliver better and more cost effective care and many are now seeking to contract with businesses such as EMFS for the provision of their medical services.  The link up with GSL will allow us to expand our services up and down the criminal justice system allowing us to care for people from the police station through the courts and, if needs be, into prisons”.

Mr Steve Roberts, EMFS Commercial Director added, “We are delighted with the deal and would like to thank our Corporate Finance advisers, PEM Corporate Finance and our legal team at Mills and Reeve (both in Cambridge) for their fantastic help and support.  Without them the deal would not have happened”.

Lake Falconer of PEM Corporate Finance added, “The market for privatised medical services is growing rapidly and EMFS should thrive under new ownership – we wish the team well for the future”.  Legal advice on the sale was provided by Vanessa Walton of Mills & Reeve in Cambridge.
